Do I owe UCR?
Almost certainly yes if you cross a state line — and quite possibly yes even if you own no trucks at all.
Checked over on
If you run trucks across state lines, yes. If you arrange for other people to run trucks across state lines, also yes. And if you own no vehicles whatsoever but you broker freight or forward it, still yes — which is the part that surprises people.
Owning no trucks is not an exemption. It is a fee bracket.
The interstate part is about the freight
You do not have to cross a state line yourself. If you haul goods that have come from another state, or that are heading to one, that is interstate commerce and the registration applies to you even though your trucks never leave home.
What you get for it
A receipt from us, and a record in the UCR system that an inspector can look up. There is no certificate, no placard and nothing to put in the cab. If you were expecting something to display, you are thinking of a different filing.
Start with your USDOT number and we’ll fill in the rest from the federal register.
